Calligraphy for Beginners: 5 Essential Supplies and Tools

…So you are brand new to calligraphy and need some supply recommendations? I got you.

When I began my calligraphy journey years and years ago, the hand lettering arts community online only had a handful of resources available, but fast forward to 2023 and the rabbit holes you can go down are seemingly endless.

If you are wondering what you need to FINALLY get started, you are in the right place, let’s get into it:

  • CALLIGRAPHY NIB HOLDERS: You don’t need to spend hundreds of dollars on a holder. You can get an affordable holder that is comfortable in your hand. That comfort level is the most important thing to focus on. I would try both a straight nib holder and an oblique holder to see which style you prefer. Check out my youtube video discussing how to hold/grip your nib holder.

  • NIB SAMPLER: It’s so nice to see that John Neal Bookseller STILL sells their nib sampler. I bought this many years ago and it was so instrumental for me in finding what worked and what didn’t. We all write differently and use varying amounts of pressure when manipulating our writing instruments. Each nib will deliver ink in a different manner depending on 1. The nibs flexibility and 2. Pressure applied.

  • INK: High-quality calligraphy ink is essential for achieving smooth, consistent lines. There are a variety of inks available, such as India ink, Sumi ink, and Acrylic ink. Make sure to choose an ink that is compatible with your pen type and preferred calligraphy style. For practice I would recommend Walnut ink.

  • PAPER: Invest in high-quality, smooth paper that is specifically designed for calligraphy. This type of paper will prevent ink from bleeding or feathering, allowing for crisp, clean lines. Some popular choices include Rhodia, Strathmore, or Canson paper. Additionally, some of my favorites are listed below.

  • BASIC STROKES/PRACTICE/DRILL SHEETS: As a beginner, it's essential to have access to guidelines and practice sheets to help you learn proper letter formations and spacing. Check out this 2-pager to get you started.
